Margaret Sohagi to Chair Santa Monica College Foundation

LOS ANGELES–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Sohagi Law Group Managing Partner Margaret Sohagi this month became Chair of the Santa Monica College (SMC) Foundation Board.

The Foundation works with donors, philanthropists and community supporters to help students with diverse backgrounds succeed at the college. They pay for scholarships, fellowships, emergency aid and more.

“I’m so excited to step in to lead this important organization in working with students from various local and global communities in as many ways possible,” said Sohagi, an environmental and land use attorney and former city planner.

“The Foundation works to implement some very important programs such as the Meal Project, which delivers free healthy meals to needy students,” added Sohagi, who is entering her fourth year with the board and was previously its Vice Chair. “The pandemic has left many students struggling with lasting issues such as unemployment, lack of housing and a loss of access to campus meal programs or pantries.”

The foundation’s Meal Project has partnered with Everytable to help those 54% of surveyed SMC students claiming food insecurity. It has so far raised $1.33 million toward its $10 million goal. The students served include foster youth, veterans, black collegians, Adelante, homeless, DREAMers, single parents, older adult students, disabled, and students with COVID-19.
